Southwest Florida’s Tony Jacklin Receives Honorary Award at International Golf Travel Market

Bradenton, SWFL, Tony Jacklin, the most successful Ryder Cup Captain in history, was honored at the 12th annual IAGTO awards ceremony, marking the conclusion of the International Golf Travel Market (IGTM) held recently in the Algarve, Portugal. The glittering awards ceremony celebrated the best performing golf destinations from across the globe, including Southwest Florida, Dubai, Vietnam and the Dominican Republic. Anthony Webber, Co-Publisher of and Editor-at-Large for Leisure & Travel Golf Magazine and the Blog attended reporting as a hosted Media guest. Jacklin was the guest of honor at the gala dinner, staged at the Tivoli Marina Hotel, Vilamoura, which brought the curtain down on the most successful IGTM to date, with almost 13,000 delegates from 47 countries in attendance. According to Peter Walton, Chief Executive of IAGTO, “More than 450 golf tour operators from 59 different countries cast their votes for these prestigious awards, taking into account many important factors including customer satisfaction, quality of golf courses and accommodation, value for money and support from the local tourism industry. The awards highlight the strength within the golf travel industry — celebrating successes and encouraging destinations across the world to help their industry to grow.” “We were delighted when Tony Jacklin accepted our IAGTO Honorary Award. We invited Tony to receive our Honorary Award in recognition of his career performances, including being a Ryder Cup icon and also the contribution that Tony Jacklin golf course designs are making to golf tourism destinations around the globe”, said Giles Greenwood, Director of IAGTO. Jacklin unveiled his plans for his new Signature 18 brand during his acceptance speech, meaning there will be a maximum of eighteen signature courses anywhere in the world. By focusing on a limited number of signature courses, Jacklin can develop a close working relationship with every client and guarantee a ‘hands-on’ approach with every aspect of the project including a personal involvement in the design process from start to finish, resulting in world-class builds and a sustainable legacy. About Tony Jacklin Born in 1944, Tony Jacklin began his professional career in 1962 and went on to win 14 European Tour titles between 1965 and 1982, including the PGA Championship in 1972. By then Jacklin had elevated his status as a two-time major winner breaking records along the way. It began with victory in the 1969 Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes, where he became the first British winner for 18 years. He followed that by winning the US Open the following year by a seven shot margin, the largest since 1921 and one that stood until 2000. Jacklin’s win was also the first by a Briton in 50 years. In the Ryder Cup he played in seven consecutive matches from 1967 and was Europe’s most successful captain ever. His triumphs earned him an OBE in 1970, with a CBE added in 1990 on the back of his reign as Ryder Cup captain. Jacklin is now a successful golf course designer, based in Bradenton, Florida.
